La Ruca is a 27 foot super panga. She takes two to four guests fishing and up to five for whale watching. She is bigger and drier than a standard panga, with room to move around a fish, and she is still small and simple enough to be quick to get going. Good for a small group that wants one boat and one captain.

What a super panga is

A super panga is a panga scaled up. Same open layout, same working boat thinking, three more feet of hull. Those three feet buy you deck space and a drier ride than the 24 foot boat gives you. La Ruca is 27 feet.

She is not a fancy boat and we are not going to pretend otherwise. There is no cabin. Dress for sun and wind, bring a hat and sunscreen, and bring a dry bag for anything you do not want wet. What you get instead of fittings is a deck that is easy to fish from and a captain who runs this water every week.

The numbers, and where she leaves from

Four guests fishing is the ceiling. Two to four is the range where the boat feels right. For whale watching, where nobody needs rod space, she takes up to five.

Split charters are rarely run. Book La Ruca and she is effectively your boat for the day. You are not sharing a deck with people you have never met, and you are not fishing on somebody else's schedule.

A 50% deposit is normal to hold a date. Rates are still being confirmed. Departure times and trip durations are still being confirmed.

The departure point for La Ruca is still being confirmed. It is not confirmed yet. Message us and we will give you the exact meeting place and time before your trip. Do not guess it from a map and do not assume it is the same dock as the other boats.

Fishing days

La Ruca fishes well with a small group. Three people with rods have room to work a fish without crossing lines, and four is workable when everyone is paying attention. That is the honest picture.

Beginners are welcome, and this is a good boat to learn on. There is less going on than there is on a bigger sportfisher, so the captain can watch all of you instead of one corner of the deck. Rod and reel rental is available if you did not travel with gear.

For spearfishing, most guests bring their own kit. Some rental is available. We provide lead and floats so you do not have to fly with them, which is the part most people are glad to hear at the airport.

Mexican fishing licences are not included in the price. Each angler buys their own and we will help you get them. Do not leave it to the morning of the trip.

You keep your catch. Expert filleting, vacuum sealing and freezing are available so it gets home with you in good shape.

Whale watching

For whale watching La Ruca carries up to five. Nobody needs a rod on those trips, so the extra person is not in anyone's way. An open boat with a low freeboard puts you close to the water, which most people prefer for watching.

Season windows, trip times and durations are still being confirmed. Ask us when you enquire and we will tell you what is actually running that week.

When La Ruca is the wrong call

  • More than four anglers. Take the 33 foot Don Pancho or the 35 foot El Wahoo King.
  • A long offshore day or a multi day trip. That is not what this boat is for.
  • You need a cabin, a head or reliable shade. Those arrangements are still being confirmed, so ask before you book if any of them decide the day for you.
  • You have people aboard who are nervous about motion. The 28 foot catamaran La Morita sits flatter and is the better answer for that group.

La Ruca suits two to four people who want one uncomplicated boat, a captain who fishes it constantly, and no split charter.

Straight answers to the questions every guest asks.

The short version of how a trip with Indigo Adventures works. Licences, deposits, boats and what happens to your catch. The full FAQ has the rest.

Read the full FAQ
Where is Indigo Adventures based, and where do trips leave from?
+

Indigo Adventures is based in El Pescadero, on the Pacific side of Baja California Sur, a few minutes south of Todos Santos. Boats launch from three points: Punta Lobos beach in Todos Santos, San Jose del Cabo, and the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Which boat runs your trip decides where you meet us.

What kinds of trips do you run?
+

Custom fishing and spearfishing charters, freediving excursions, whale watching from mid December to April, and kayaking. Every trip is built around your group, your dates and the conditions rather than a fixed timetable, and almost every one goes out private.

How does booking work?
+

Book online on the Book Now page, where availability is live and a 50 percent deposit holds the date. If you would rather we picked the trip, send an enquiry with who is coming, when you are here and what you want out of the day, and we will say which trip fits and which one does not.

Is a Mexican fishing licence included?
+

No. Everyone fishing in Mexican waters needs a Mexican sportfishing licence, and each angler buys their own. We help you arrange it before the day so nobody is sorting paperwork on the dock. The same licence covers rod and spear.

Do you run shared or split charters?
+

Rarely. Almost every trip goes out as a private boat for you and your group. If a split makes sense for a small party we will say so when you enquire.

How many people fit on a boat?
+

Three on the 24 foot Punta Lobos panga, up to four on La Ruca and La Morita, and up to six on Don Pancho and El Wahoo King. Whale watching numbers run a little higher because nobody is swinging a rod.

Can I keep what I catch?
+

Yes. The catch goes home with you. Filleting at the dock, vacuum sealing and freezing are available, and most guests fly home with a cooler. Marlin are mostly released, with judgement on the day.

Are beginners welcome?
+

Yes, on fishing days. The crew rigs and handles the gear and hands you the rod when something eats. Guided spearfishing needs breath-hold experience and runs on a strict buddy system, which is the only legal way to spearfish in Mexico. Water, ice and snacks are normally aboard.
